| Mining, a pioneer in national, regional and local development |
| |
Mining is a strong tool for regional
development. At one time, it was the main incentive for building basic infrastructures
in regions where it had developed. Today, it remains a mainstay of development.
Mining has not just brought employment and better incomes for its staff and
the community, but has always provided the impetus for bringing in medical, school
and socio-cultural infrastructure. It has also encouraged a response in terms
of meeting the basic needs of the people living nearby and the integration of
technology in the regions where it is present. This basic infrastructure necessary
directly for mining and indirectly for regional development represents at least
25 to 30% of the cost of a development project.
Environmental protection and rational use of natural resources under proper
conditions of hygiene, health and staff safety, is a tradition in the mining
industry.
